Functional Capacity Evaluation Interpretations

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

The Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a compilation information that 1. objectively assists in measuring functional abilities and consistency of efforts, 2. provides further data for the determination of permanent work capacity and 3. helps to promote safe work parameters. Colorado Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine physicians will refer patients to occupational or physical therapists for specific, individualized FCE testing. Upon completion of the functional capacity testing, the therapist sends results to the referring Colorado Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine physician for interpretation. Using findings from the clinical examination, along with the FCE data, the Colorado Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine physician assists the employer in determining the work capability of the injured worker.

How Long Does it Take To Conduct a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

The time that it takes to complete an FCE may vary from 2 hours to an entire day. The time variation depends on the extent of injury, the job responsibilities and the functional abilities of the person being tested.

What Will I Be Expected to Do During the FCE?

The activities that you will be asked to perform will simulate your job responsibilities. These activities may include: lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, standing and walking. You will be asked to perform the tasks to the best of your ability.
