What is an Independent Medical Examination?
An important part of case management, Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) are used by insurance companies, attorneys and others involved in managing workers’ compensation, personal injury and disability cases. IMEs are performed by impartial physicians to provide information on case management, evidence in hearings and other legal proceedings. The medical expert must know the criteria and context of the client’s request prior to performing the IME.
What is the physician looking for when conducting an IME?
Most IMEs focus on 1. diagnosis, 2. causal relationships, 3. prognosis, 4. maximum medical improvement (MMI), 5. impairment rating, 6. work capability, and 7. efficacy of care. Treatment is never rendered during an IME.
How do I refer a patient to a CROM physician for an IME?
Independent Medical Examinations are typically referred to CROM physicians by an insurance company representative or an attorney.
