D.O.s and M.D.s

There are two types of complete physicians in the United States, D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) and M.D. (Allopathic Physician). Both D.O.s and M.D.s are fully qualified physicians licensed to practice medicine and to prescribe medication.

D.O.s and M.D.s ARE ALIKE IN MANY WAYS:

  • Applicants to both D.O. and M.D. medical colleges typically have a four-year undergraduate degree with an emphasis on scientific courses.
  • Both D.O.s and M.D.s complete four years of basic medical education.
  • After medical school, both D.O.s and M.D.s can choose practice in a specialty area of medicine - such as physiatry – after completing a residency program (typically two to six years of additional training.)
  • Both D.O.s and M.D.s must pass comparable state licensing examinations.

ARE CROM PHYSICIANS D.O.s or M.D.s?

The doctors at Colorado Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine includes both D.O.s and M.D.s. All CROM physical medicine and rehabilitation physiatrists are well trained and have studied extensively in their area of specialty. This training involves experience in orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and many other disciplines that involve the spine, brain, nerves, muscles, bones and joints. We take a whole person approach to patient care. We can design and tailor a rehabilitation program that best maximizes each patient’s participation and enjoyment in activities associated with both work and leisure. This individualized approach has proven to be cost effective in the overall care of musculoskeletal injuries.

An advantage of our practice size; education, clinical training, practice experience of our physicians; and multiple locations is that we are able to accommodate the needs of our referral sources and patients on a timely basis while offering a variety of specialized services.
