What is a Physiatrist?

A physiatrist (fiz”i-at’rist) is a physician who has spent four years of post-medical school specialty training, becoming a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This training involves experience in orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and many other disciplines that involve the spine, brain, muscles, bones and joints.

While an orthopedist is a specialist that performs surgery on bones, physiatrists study the biomechanical relationships between muscles, nerves, ligaments and joints. A physiatrist uses physical therapy, occupational therapy, manipulation, splints, braces, exercises, and injections to treat patients. Also, if the situation arises that surgery becomes necessary, the physiatrist is also skilled in knowing when a surgical referral is appropriate.

A physiatrist takes a whole person approach to medicine. We believe that the only way to get people better is to consider their goals in regards to their diagnosis. We will want to know about how you function at home, how you function at work, and just about everything in between.

In summary, a physiatrist is a medical doctor that specializes in the conservative treatment of problems involving the muscles, nerves, joints, tendons, bones and ligaments. We are specially trained to design and tailor a rehabilitation program so that your participation in activities at work or at play are more enjoyable.
